Central and Eastern European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (CEERES) (Master’s Program)

The Central and Eastern European, Russian and Eurasian Studies program aims to provide students with the opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge of historical and contemporary development trends in society, politics, economics, and culture. The program is structured to offer students a diverse range of options for in-depth study of the region’s shared communist past and the dynamics of post-communist and post-Cold War transformation shaped by this past.

Specific components of the curriculum and mobility schemes offered by the University of Glasgow, University of Tartu, and Ilia State University will help students achieve the following objectives:

  • Develop new, innovative approaches to studying Eastern Europe and the Eurasia region with particular emphasis on the Caucasus region;
  • Familiarize themselves with appropriate disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches from social sciences and humanities;
  • Study the regional language (Russian) to access written sources in this language when conducting research;
  • Guide independent research conducted by students related to Caucasus region studies;
  • Utilize mobility opportunities to acquire, develop, and refine intercultural awareness and understand its significance.

 

Degree awarded:

  • Jointly awarded degree: International Master’s (University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom and University of Tartu, Tartu, Estonia)
  • Master of Caucasus Studies (Ilia State University, Tbilisi, Georgia)

 

Language of instruction: English

Program duration: 120 ECTS credits, 4 semesters

The admission process to the program is coordinated by the University of Glasgow as the coordinating university, based on agreements with the University of Tartu and other partner universities in the consortium.

Admission candidates must submit the following documents:

  • Copy(ies) of degree certificate(s);
  • Copy(ies) of transcript(s) indicating courses taken and grades received by the applicant; a prerequisite for admission to the master’s level is academic achievement at a 2.1 level or equivalent (for example, GPA 3.0 or higher);
  • Officially certified English translations of diploma(s) and transcript(s);
  • Two letters of recommendation on letterhead;
  • Copy of passport photo page (only for applicants from non-European countries);
  • Two-page personal statement in which applicants must answer the following questions:
    • Why is studying in this program the next step for your academic career?
    • Why do you want to study in this program?
    • How will this program help your future career development?
  • Certificate demonstrating adequate English language proficiency (required only for applicants for whom English is not their native language):
    • IELTS (Academic test): overall score minimum 6.5 or higher, with no less than 6.0 points in each test category
    • TOEFL iBT: overall score minimum 90, including minimum 20 points in reading, minimum 19 in listening, minimum 19 in speaking, and minimum 23 points in the writing component
    • CAE: overall score minimum 176; no less than 169 points in each test category
    • CPE: overall score minimum 176; no less than 169 points in each test category
    • PTE Academic: overall score minimum 60; no less than 59 points in each test category
    • London Trinity College English Integrated Skills Test: successful completion of ISE II level, and successful completion of each test component.

Brief structural description: To obtain jointly awarded International Master qualifications (University of Tartu and University of Glasgow) and Master of Caucasus Studies (Ilia State University), students must accumulate 120 credits according to the following scheme:

Semester I — 30 credits:

  • Mandatory courses — 18 credits
  • Elective courses — 12 credits

Semester II — 30 credits:

  • Mandatory courses — 20 credits
  • Elective courses — 10 credits

Semester III — 30 credits:

  • Mandatory courses — 6 credits
  • Elective courses — 24 credits

Semester IV — 30 credits:

  • Master’s thesis — 30 credits
